Mike Kelley et la (dé)construction identitaire

Depuis le début de sa carrière initiée au tournant des années 1980, Mike Kelley a travaillé à partir de stéréotypes de l’identité culturelle américaine contemporaine pour explorer leurs soubassements inconscients. Dans son œuvre, l’architecture se présente comme un modèle spatial et psychique pour penser les mécanismes de la socialisation et de la répression. En nous attardant sur deux œuvres mettant en jeu des architectures « formatives » (la maison familiale et les espaces éducatifs) nous avons cherché à analyser comment Kelley parvient à interroger l’identité comme un processus constructif, mettant aux prises la reproduction inconsciente des structures sociales avec la capacité de déplacement du sujet.

Since the beginning of his career initiated in the early 1980s, Mike Kelley has worked from stereotypes of contemporary American cultural identity to explore their subconscious foundations. In his work, architecture presents itself as a spatial and psychic model for thinking about the mechanisms of socialization and repression. Focusing on two works involving formative architectures (the family home and educational spaces), we sought to analyze how Kelley manages to interrogate identity as a constructive process, confronting the unconscious reproduction of social structures with the ability to move the subject.
